three writing things

I joined a Discord for my favorite trope, and they organized an exchange just for the server! It only had 12 participants (and 5 of them wrote 9k+ words), and was all Original Works so it was easy for everyone to read everything. We did an author guessing game where I proved inscrutable despite thinking I was super obvious, and I got to wallow around in The Trope, at least reading-wise.
The fic that I wrote, The Sea that He Commanded, is one that I'm proud of, but I think I could have leaned more into the iddy tropes given the exchange it was for. The structure was also a bit strange: the first chapter ends with a bit of, uh, mild torture, which makes it a bit perhaps forbidding for readers to click through into the rest, which is more about cultural exchange and worldbuilding. I think in more revisions, I would have cut down a bit on the end of that first chapter. I actually had my partner read this one and I think they concluded some things about my interests that are not necessarily... the case...
The exchange coincided perfectly with some time off I had, which also made it a very nice experience, in terms of the amount of time and rest I had going into writing and reading. Let's make all exchanges a mandatory public holiday, thanks.

This has been one of my favorite exchanges recently, but this year it didn't go so well. I still enjoyed writing a fun, tropey fic, and even in my dead nostalgia fandom no less! But I was pretty sad that my recipient rejected the fic. I tell myself it's a consequence of the format, a fandom-blind exchange that encourages/normalizes rejecting gifts that don't work for you. But I think maybe I got too close to one of their DNWs. I'm not starving for attention on the fic or anything; it's what my account is basically about, so I was really happy people checked it out. But I do wish I'd done better for my recip!
