Yuletide 2024 recs
Dec. 29th, 2024 10:08 amA couple niche things I've loved from the collection, currently each sitting at only around 20-some hits.
Title: gonna start fresh, take a couple new steps
Fandom: Girls5eva (TV)
Characters: Dawn, Scott, Wickie
Wordcount: 4371
Notes/why rec: Captures the banter and the characters from the show perfectly! Hilarious and sweet. Dawn and Scott invite Wickie to their bedroom. Wickie, as always, kills it.
Title: a silent forest
Fandom: A Dark Room (Video Game)
Characters: Builder, Wanderer
Wordcount: 1124
Notes/why rec: Lovely, moody story about their first meeting. Really captures the steady, methodical building-up vibes of the game, except here it's a tentative trust and partnership they're crafting.
Title: her foot was light (and her eyes were wild)
Fandom: A Guide for Young Ladies Entering the Service of the Fairies - Rosamund Hodge
Characters: Female Elf Knight, Human Maiden
Wordcount: 1423
Notes/why rec: Just a beautiful fae tale where you fall in love with an impossible stranger from another realm, and despite your best intentions, succumb to their otherworldly temptations. Except the reversal here is it's the human who is so alluring and irresistible and the foolish fairy who falls.
Title: Shortcut
Fandom: The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Characters: Iktenos, a staircase
Wordcount: 1805
Notes/why rec: The premise hooked me immediately! An architect casually manages to get an impractical staircase put into the palace, and there follow many scenes over the next hundred years of palace denizens making use of this secret shortcut only they know. A delight!
Title: The River
Fandom: Alice in Borderland
Characters: Chishiya, Kuzuryu
Wordcount: 3961
Notes/why rec: And of course, my gift!! I absolutely love the setup in this, watching the characters interact was a delight as always, except I got to see them in a brand new dynamic and a new original death game that was fun and grisly! Plus it even comes with bonus puzzles that entertained me over a busy holiday season.
Fun fact: recs 3 and 4 have the same last three digits of their url, which tripped me up when I was double-checking my links! What were the chances?
There are 10^3 = 1000 different possible combinations of last three digits, so 1000^5 different combinations for the 5 recs I gave. The probability that they were all distinct (as I expected when using this heuristic to double-check I didn't copy the same url twice) should be 1000 * 999 * 998 * 997 * 996 / 1000^5 = 99.003%. That this didn't happen (at least two numbers were identical) is the inverse of that, 1%. Wow, less rare than I thought but still unlikely. Another Yuletide miracle?
